Grief and loss

Life is always a mix of joy and sorrow. Just like we know how to receive happiness, we also need to know how to take loss and grief in life. Grief is an emotion. It is a psychological state which is known through a sense of loss. The loss and grief could be due to a loss of family or friend or a person close to you. It could also be a loss of a spouse through divorce. It could also be a perceived loss of an opportunity for professional enhancement. However, all said and done loss of a dear one causes great sorrow to a person. Loss of a person through death can cause great grief. It takes a lot of time to digest that someone has left you. Grief is a very complicated emotion and it can't be analyzed easily. It is an expression of self-pity. This comes from a thought that your loved one is not around you. It also implies on how much you miss them. It is also a feeling of regret. You will never be able to share your feelings and emotions for that person.

Handling grief is highly individualized. People also vary in the time the amount of time they need to go through the grieving process. They need time to reach the stage of acceptance and self-rejuvenation. There is a particular grief cycle which everyone goes through in life. These happen in phases.

Some people accept that a loss has occurred. Some people pass through the phase at a faster pace than others. Some people deny accepting that there is a loss and the refuse to budge to anything. The severity of the shock could have an impact and lead to emotional paralysis. During sudden loss of a loved one, this emotional inaction acts as a buffer between the trauma and its acceptance.

Anger and outrage could be the possible reactions. Questions can arise as to, why me? Some people also have the doubts of belief in religion and philosophy due to grief. They are so shaken by the tragedy. There is a feeling of unfairness which creeps in. the person has a feeling of bitterness and pity.

Bitterness and depression are inseparable. There is always hopelessness regarding loss. This leads to causing sleeplessness and loss of appetite. This phase is the most difficult phase as one has to battle it out with great deal. During this stage, an individual frequently relapses into the states of anger. There could also be a feeling of blame and total negativity about life. It is not easy to deal with grief and it has to come with time and you need family's emotional support to cope with this.
